Las imágenes que se crean al hacer ultrasonido ayudan a los médicos a diagnosticar y tratar condiciones médicas. El ultrasonido, también conocido como sonograma, usa ondas sonoras que producen fotografías de las estructuras internas del cuerpo.
Este estudio médico no invasivo – y que no utiliza radiación- se usa para ayudar a diagnosticar las causas de dolor, hinchazón e infección en los órganos internos del cuerpo, y para examinar al bebé en las mujeres embarazadas. También se usa para ver el cerebro y las caderas en los niños pequeños. Igualmente se usa para ayudar a guiar biopsias, diagnosticar condiciones del corazón y evaluar el daño luego de un ataque al corazón.
Para hacer este estudio se requiere poca o ninguna preparación especial. El doctor le dará instrucciones sobre cómo prepararse, incluyendo si debe abstenerse de comer o beber de antemano. El día del estudio debe vestir ropa cómoda y es probable que le pidan ponerse una bata.
